Wild Animals of Ireland - Red Deer Stag in Autumn Light

Red Deer - Our largest deer and the only native species to Ireland, the red deer gets its name from the red colour imparted to its coat particularly in autumn. The only truly native Red Deer herd are to be found in Killarney Co.Kerry. The deer usually inhabit wooded upland areas and appear in the open to graze. The breeding season or rut is in October when the Stags are competing for females and territory. The characteristic deep roar of the stags can be heard particulalry on early mornings during the rut. The calves are born the following June.
