Wild Birds of Ireland - Artic Tern

Artic Tern An agile, slender sea bird with narrow, pointed wings, forked tail and pointed bill. They have grey and white plumage with a dark cap on their heads and a red coloured bill. Artic Terns have the longest migration route of all birds arriving from as far as Antarctica to Ireland in the summer months to breed before returning to the southern hemisphere in autumn. They feed at sea mainly on fish but will also eat insects and small crustaceans. Artic Terns can be observed around our coasts in their main breeding colonies in Counties Wexford, Kerry, Mayo and Donegal but also on inland lake areas in Galway and Mayo.
