Wild Birds of Ireland - Whitethroat

The Whitethroat is medium-sized Warbler, similar in size to a Great Tit. The male is more colourful with a white throat, pale blue-grey head and a brown back while the female has a dull brown and white plumage. They are summer visitors to Ireland for the breeding season (April to August) and they winter in sub-Saharan Africa. They have a scratchy often harsh call and can be difficult to observe calling from the undergrowth. Whitethroats nest in a wide variety of habitats including scrub-land, woodland and hedgerows. They feed mostly on insects and berries.
