Wild Birds of Ireland - Sandwich Tern with sand-eel catch

The Sandwich Tern is a medium sized seabird, with white plumage, a black cap on its head, a long black bill with a yellow tip and short black legs. They feed at sea by diving for their prey from above and live mainly on sandeels and sprats. Sandwich Terns are mainly summer visitors to Ireland for the breeding season. They nest on islands in shingle and sand dunes in certain locations around our coast. The main colony in Ireland can be found at Lady's Island Co. Wexford. They winter in southern Europe and Africa.
