Wild Birds of Ireland - Spotted Flycatcher

Spotted Flycatcher - The Spotted Flycatcher is a summer visitor to Ireland arriving from Africa in May to breed while departing in August or September. They are slightly larger than a robin in size and have a dull grey brown back and tail with streaked head while their underside is white with grey brown streaking. While not particularly common Spotted Flycatchers are widespread in Ireland and may be observed in open woodlands, parks, large gardens and suitably mature hedgerows. They specialise in catching insects in flight often returning to a favoured perch before taking flight again.
