Wild Animals of Ireland - Irish Hare

The Irish hare is a native mammal and much larger than the more common rabbit. Hares can be found in a wide variety of habitats from upland mountain regions to lowland and coastal areas. They have a reddish brown fur in summer turning more greyish brown during winter. They can be distinguished from the non-native brown hare by having a pure white tail, shorter ears and a stockier build. They are herbivores and feed mostly on grasses.
